[ History ] Open Question : Was WWI artillery a safer job?

Was being an artilleryman in the Great war significantly safer than an infantryman in the trenches? I mean you are miles behind the line lobbing shells with little chance of having to face enemy rifle and machinegun fire. And the quarters I would imagine would be far more comfortable than a damp dugout in a trench. Of course there was the threat of counter-battery fire but I'm assuming it was at best rudimentary in the beginning. NOT disrespecting artillerymen in any way.
