[ Physics ] Open Question : how does friction stops a moving object?

how does friction stops a moving object? Suppose, static friction is 5 N and force applied is 10 N. Then, what we see here is that the acceleration given by applied force is more than the retardation given by friction... hence, considering this fact, an object should never stop accelerating??
