10 Things You Didn?t Know About the PGA Awards

The Producers Guild of America began issuing awards to producers of extraordinary motion pictures and television shows over 20 years ago. The PGA Awards, which will be presented on Saturday night, are considered one of the events that predict who will walk home a winner at the Academy Awards. A few facts you might not have known about this award:
- The Producers Guild of America is the merging of two professional guilds: the Screen Producers Guild, formed in 1950, and the Television Producers Guild, formed in 1957. In 1962, the two organizations joined.
- The first awards were given by the PGA in 1990 and called the Golden Laurel Awards.
- The first recipients were Lili Fini and Richard D. Zanuck for their work on Driving Miss Daisy.
- Fourteen of the 22 PGA winning films have gone on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
- In fact, the PGA has predicted the Best Picture award at the Oscars for the past 5 years running.
- However, this year, if either Skyfall or Moonrise Kingdom wins a PGA, they are guaranteed not to predict the Oscar winner. Neither film was nominated for an Academy Award.
- The PGAs’ outstanding picture award is formally known as The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. Zanuck was a Hollywood producer whose career was among the longest in the motion picture industry.
- Have you noticed a lowercase “p.g.a.” after the names of producers in the credits of films you’ve recently seen? That’s the PGA’s new Producer’s Mark, which signifies that the person in question did the work required to legitimately be considered a producer of a film.
- The Producers Guild has over 4700 members. Membership perks include tickets to Oscar-nominated films, health insurance and pension plans.
- Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to JJ Abrams, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
