6 Teen Movies That Inspired Musicals

At the recent SAG Awards, Mean Girls star Tina Fey dropped a juicy piece of news. She’s trying to bring the teen flick back – as a musical!

“We want to. I would love to," Fey told E! News. "I'm trying to develop it with my husband and I think Paramount's onboard."

If the project comes to pass, Mean Girls will be one of many teen movies to get the musical treatment. It seems many teen classics make it to the stage, though most people never realize it (like Teen Witch!)

So with that in mind, here are 6 teen movies and the musicals you probably never knew they inspired. Is your favorite movie on the list?

Carrie

Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie inspired three different movies, including one hitting theaters in March. The book also spawned three musicals with the latest running in New York City’s MCC Theater last year.

The original Carrie film, now a cult classic, starred Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, William Katt, and John Travolta.

The Karate Kid

It’s Karate, Kid! The Musical hit NYC’s Teatro La Tea back in 2004. Tracks like “We Are the Bitchkicks,” which manages to incorporate the Jem and the Holograms theme song, thrilled audiences and amused critics.

1984’s The Karate Kid starred Ralph Macchio, Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, and Elisabeth Shue. Morita received an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination for his role in the film.

The Breakfast Club

Chicago’s pH Productions put on a Breakfast Club musical back in 2010 though they apparently ran into trouble with the John Hughes estate.

A classic coming of age drama, The Breakfast Club starred Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, and Ally Sheedy. The film hit theaters in 1985.

Heathers

Kevin Murphy, Laurence O'Keefe (Legally Blonde), and Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness) joined forces in 2010 for a musical adaptation of Heathers. Here’s a clip from “Dead Gay Son,” inspired by the fake gay suicide scene.

The original Heathers (1988) starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. In 2009, rumors of a sequel began floating around but it seems nothing ever came of it.

Jawbreaker

Mean girl flick Jawbreaker got the musical treatment in 2010. The musical Jawbreaker featured a score by Jonathan Larson, writers Jordan Mann and Jeff Thomson, and book by Darren Stein, writer and director of the original film.

Inspired by Heathers, 1999’s Jawbreaker starred Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, Julie Benz, and Judy Greer.

Bring It On

Bring It On: The Musical opened for a limited engagement on August – December 2012. The cast featured award-winning cheerleaders from around the country, and critics praised the musical for its impressive dance numbers and gymnastic prowess.

Released in 2000, Bring It On starred Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford, and Gabrielle Union.
