Stan Lee Partners with Chinese Studio to Create New Superhero Film

The Avengers creator Stan Lee has teamed up with China’s state-run movie studio, National Film Capital (NFC), to create a new Chinese superhero. The champion, who will star in a film called The Annihilator, will be on par with Lee’s other creations - Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men.
“This is the perfect Chinese hero,” Lee said of the film’s crime-fighting phenom. “China is a nation that is involved with movies and the industry is growing so it’s as though all the pieces are coming together beautifully.”Though Hollywood’s current superhero films have made their way to the Chinese market, the reception has been lukewarm, at best. NFC and Lee hope a film starring a Chinese superhero will draw in China's audience.Though details about The Annihilator are scarce, TIME reports that Real Steel screenwriter Dan Gilroy will write the script for the film which has a budget of $100 - $150 million. The movie will also be in English and have 3-D effects.NFC hopes to partner with more Hollywood studios to create a catalog of international films.
“The Chinese film industry needs Hollywood expertise and Hollywood needs the Chinese market,” Liu Yuan, co-chairman and president of National Film Capital’s American unit, said in a statement. “We are the perfect one-stop China turn-key partner for Hollywood.”Photo: Wikimedia
