Jennifer Salke on Breast Cancer & the Impact it Has Had on Her Life
Jennifer Salke has been coming to the Taste for a Cure event for the past few years, but this was the first time she was honored for all of the wonderful things she does. Aside from being the president of NBC Entertainment, Jennifer spends a lot of time contributing to great causes. For this reason, she was awarded the Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award at the event. She chatted with StarCam?s Jennifer Tapiero about what an amazing honor it was to be recognized and what her personal connection to the efforts to find a cure for cancer is.
?I have such a connection to cancer in my life. My mother had stage 3 breast cancer at 43 and survived. My mother-in-law passed away from breast cancer at 53, but I have the breast cancer gene,? Jennifer explained. ??it gives me a huge elevated risk of breast and ovarian cancer, so I?ve had all these surgeries over the past two years to kind of mitigate that risk. I?m really just happy to have that behind me and kind of looking forward and sort of being a warrior against cancer.?
Jennifer aims to help people better understand that there are steps you can take before you develop cancer to prevent it from happening. It?s all about knowing and comprehending your risks and options. The genetic tests involved in finding out whether or not you have the breast-cancer gene are pretty pricey, but it is worth it if it saves your life. This gives people the ability to take the measures necessary to dodge being sitting ducks waiting for cancer to take them.
One seriously courageous individual that Jennifer mentioned was Giuliana Rancic. She found out just a few months ago that she had breast cancer. Rather than hiding her battle, she fought it in front of the public eye and encouraged women regardless of age to take the precautions and never think it couldn?t happen to them. Jennifer said Giuliana is graceful, brave, courageous and inspiring for the way she handled her situation!
