Dennis Haysbert talks with StarCam at the 2013 Satellite Awards about what it was like working with Common and Michael Rainey Jr. in LUV and why he calls awards season a mixed bag.
Not everyone’s happy with the offerings at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A conservative group in Utah wants the state to cut festival funding because a few Sundance films contain objectionable content.
"What would you call a film festival airing movies that explore the lives of porn stars, adulterous relationships between mothers and their friends' children, and teenagers competing to lose their virginity?" wrote Derek Monson, Sutherland Institute's director of public policy. "Many Utahns' values would lead them to call this `obscenity' or `pornography,' but to the state of Utah, evidently it is simply `economic activity.'" Sundance founder Robert Redford dismissed Monson’s remarks, saying “the narrowest minds bark the loudest” and that’s it’s best to ignore those who don’t understand the Constitution. Zing! Utah spends around $300,000 supporting Sundance which brings in around $80 million for the state. In other words, it’s more likely Monson will star in porn film than Utah will cut funds to the lucrative festival. Wondering which films ruffled the most feathers this year? Here are four of the Sundance Film Festival’s most controversial submissions.
Lovelace
Starring Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, and Juno Temple, Lovelace explores the life of the Linda Lovelace, one of the most popular porn stars of all time. Conservative groups are not pleased.
Two Mothers
In a film one critic called “the best and worst movie” at Sundance, Two Mothers stars Naomi Watts and Robin Wright as two friends who each have a secret affair with the other’s son. Exclusive Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to the film Monson calls “obscene.”
After Tiller
Abortion, especially late-term abortion, is an extremely divisive topic. One only has to look at the comments in this article to see how passionate people feel about taking a pro-life or pro-choice stance. After Tiller is a documentary about the only four doctors in America willing to do late-term abortions after the 2009 murder of Dr. George Tiller.
Escape From Tomorrow
Escape From Tomorrow is controversial, not because it features questionable content, but because director Randy Moore shot the entire film in Walt Disney World without obtaining the proper permits. Someone’s getting sued!
It’s seems like forever since Lindsay Lohan was a child, but you can’t possibly forget how adorable she was. I came across this video of Lohan during the time she was filming The Parent Trap back in 1997-98 and I had to share. Redheaded and freckled, Lindsay was peppy, optimistic, precious. It was her ...

After Season 5's extremely delayed start, we got used to the idea of never knowing when we'd see Mad Men on TV. Now, though, we can stop flipping pages on our calendars and guessing, because a premiere date has finally been announced. April 7th is the day to remember.
Season 6 will premiere with a two-hour first episode directed by executive producer Scott Hornbacher and written by Matthew Weiner, the show's creator. He said of the upcoming premiere, "If you like the show, there's a good chance you'll like the premiere. It is different than last year's in a sense that it was my idea and I was just trying to give bang for a buck to an audience that I didn't want to lose because we'd been away so long. This year it's really constructed like a film. It is its own story and hopefully it foreshadows the rest of the season."
Weiner mentions it's important to catch up if you haven't, since all of season six is "in reference to last season."
The newest season will be 13 episodes (technically the premiere counts as two), and Weiner says his thinking changed when he realized the show would be coming to an end in a couple of years. "I was really starting to think in terms of the last 26 episodes together," he said. "We've been taking advantage of the 26 episodes we have left to do all the things that we've wanted to do, and so far I think that the audience is in for quite a ride."
We can't wait to find out what happens with Don and Megan, Joan and her dirtbag husband Greg (when we last saw Joan, she was being served divorce papers), and Peggy and Abe. Will you be watching?
Showtime's hit show are, ahem, showing no signs of slowing down, and the network has taken notice of three series' popularity. Their Sunday night lineup of Shameless, House of Lies, and Californication welcomed record-setting premieres earlier this month, and in response, the network has renewed all three shows.
David Nevins, Showtime's entertainment chief said in a statement today, "Californication, House of Lies, and Shameless possess highly distinctive comedic voices, and given that all three continue to grow their audience season after season, the pick-up decision was easy. I am incredibly excited to see what each of these series has in store for their next seasons."
Production for all three shows will start later on this year, and as you may have been able to predict, the following seasons will debut in 2014. All three series are set in Los Angeles.
Shameless, which is produced by John Wells, is up 22 percent in its third season, and attracts an average of 5.4 million viewers per episode. House of Lies pulls in 3.2 million, and Californication, which is in its sixth season, averages 3.1 million viewers a week.
Showtime has been on the up and up in the past several years, and their most talked-about show, Homeland, has been collecting awards this year. Two new dramas will debut later this year—Liev Schreiber's Ray Donovan will run alongside Dexter in June, and Lizzy Caplan's Masters of Sex will run alongside Homeland in September.
Comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is now the proud owner of a Hollywood Star! Kimmel, 45, gathered today with family and friends for the star’s afternoon unveiling ceremony.

This is embarrassing,” Kimmel said while thanking the people who supported him throughout the years. “People are going to pee on this star.”Kimmel’s star, the 2,489th plaque to appear on the Walk of Fame, is now installed at 6840 Hollywood Boulevard, in front of the El Capitan Entertainment Centre. He was bound to end up on Hollywood Boulevard!”Kimmel made headlines today for his faux feud with Matt Damon. Last night, Damon “kidnapped” Kimmel and took over his late night show, interviewing a slew of big-name guests as a bound Jimmy looked on. Damon even chatted with Kimmel’s ex, Sarah Silverman. Congratulations, Jimmy!
