If you’re more into independent films than Hollywood blockbusters, check out the winners of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Beasts of the Southern Wild and The House I Live In picked up Grand Jury Prizes in the U.S. Dramatic and U.S. Documentary categories, while The Surrogate and The Invisible War rated well with audiences. Here are the films that took home Grand Jury and Audience Award prizes.
U.S. Dramatic Competition
The Grand Jury Prize, U.S. Dramatic: Beasts of the Southern Wild
“Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in “the Bathtub,” a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink’s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he’s no longer there to protect her.”
The Audience Award, U.S. Dramatic: The Surrogate“The quest for love appears insurmountable when a man confined to an iron lung determines, at age 38, to lose his virginity.”
U.S. Documentary CompetitionThe Grand Jury Prize, U.S. Documentary: The House I Live In
“In the past 40 years, the War on Drugs has accounted for 45 million arrests, made America the world's largest jailer, and destroyed impoverished communities at home and abroad. Yet drugs are cheaper, purer, and more available today than ever. Where did we go wrong, and what can be done?”
The Audience Award, U.S. Documentary: The Invisible War“Casualties of war rage beyond the battlefield. As ranks of women in the American military swell, so do incidents of rape.”
World Cinema Documentary CompetitionThe World Cinema Jury Prize, Documentary: The Law in These Parts
“The Law in These Parts is commanding and compassionate as it goes to the heart of Israel’s moral quandary. In this country founded on democratic principles, can justice truly be served in the occupied territories given the current system of law administered by Israel for Palestinians?”
The World Cinema Audience Award, Documentary: Searching for Sugar Man“Rodriguez was the greatest ’70s U.S. rock icon who never was. His albums were critically well-received, but sales bombed, and he faded away into obscurity among rumors of a gruesome death. However, as fate would have it, a bootleg copy of his record made its way to South Africa, where his music became a phenomenal success. When his second album finally gets released on CD in South Africa, two fans take it as a sign, deciding to look into the mystery of how Rodriguez died and what happened to all of the profits from his album sales.”
World Cinema Dramatic Competition
The World Cinema Jury Prize, Dramatic: Violeta Went to Heaven
“Violeta Went to Heaven tells the extraordinary story of Chilean folksinger Violeta Parra, tracing her evolution from impoverished child to international sensation to Chile’s national hero, while capturing the swirling intensity of her inner contradictions, fallibilities, and passions.”
The World Cinema Audience Prize, Dramatic: Valley of Saints
“Intricately weaving contemporary issues with traditional culture and ancient myths, Valley of Saints is a vibrant, lyrical film about finding one’s path home in a changing world.”

The first month of the year is nearly over, and with it came a fresh crop of box office hits (and misses). Here are the top ten box office earners for the last week of January 2012.
The Grey knocked Underworld: Awakening from the top slot, earning an estimated $20 million its opening weekend. The action thriller starring Liam Neeson follows the trials of a group of men stranded in the Alaska wilderness after their plane crashes in a wolf-infested area. The Grey is based on a short story by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers.
Underworld: Awakening placed second at the box office this weekend, bringing in an additional $12.5 million. The 3D action film, the fourth installment of the Underworld series, stars Kate Beckinsale, Sandrine Holt, Theo James, Michael Ealy, and India Eisley.
Newcomer One for the Money placed third at the box office with earnings of $11.7 million, while George Lucas’ Red Tails fell to fourth place this week with earnings of $10.4 million. Fifth place goes to Man on a Ledge. The thriller film starring Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, and Ed Harris brought in $8.3 million its first weekend on the big screen. StarCam attended the premiere of the thrilling movie. Be sure to check out our exclusive interviews with the cast and crew Man on a Ledge!
Meanwhile, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close earned an additional $7 million this weekend, falling from number four to number six. The critically-acclaimed film The Descendants placed seventh, with earnings of $6.5 million, while Contraband ($6.5 million), Beauty and the Beast 3D ($5.3 million), and Haywire ($4 million) round out the list of top ten box office earners.

In season three of True Blood, vampire bad boy Russell Edgington met an unhappy fate after Sookie’s guy pals wrapped him in silver chains and buried him beneath several layers of cement (video below). The vampire king of Mississippi vowed to get revenge, but vamps Eric Northman and Bill Compton seemed confident Russell wouldn’t escape his cement grave anytime soon. However, that may soon change.
In the True Blood teaser trailer below, viewers learn that “In Bon Temps, nothing stays buried forever.” Though the message could refer to just about any of the series’ vampires, it seems likely that Mr. Edington may be making a comeback. The question is - how does he escape? Does Eric free the reviled Russell at the prodding of his maker, Godric? Do Alcide or Bill come to the rescue? True Blood fans are just going to have to wait until this summer to find out, when HBO premieres the fifth season of the popular vampire drama.

Given her fabulously successful career and red-hot romantic life, Julianne Hough has a lot going on these days.
The former ?Dancing with the Stars? starlet is featured in a new interview with Parade magazine in which she opens up about her charmed existence.
When it comes to finding a balance between work and love, Julianne explained, ?It?s a hard thing to do, especially when you?re so caught up in your work and bettering yourself. It does get hard because you?re so focused on that, but I think at the end of the day you have to find a balance with what?s really important.?
?I?m so lucky that I have a great relationship. I?m very blessed and I don?t take anything for granted. I think if you alienate people and just focus on your work then it just becomes lonely and it?s not fun anymore.?
Ms. Hough also noted that she?s uber-proud of working with Tom Cruise on ?Rock of Ages.? ?Where do I go from there? It?s very cool to be able to say that my first real film was Footloose and my second film I got to start alongside Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta-Jones. I?m very fortunate and I know it doesn?t happen like that every day, so I?m definitely still counting my blessings and working really hard.?
On the downside, fame has forced Julianne to deal with paparazzi-related issues. ?I don?t think you can ever get used to it. It?s definitely strange. Especially since I grew up in a family that it?s all about family and not about materialistic things. So it is weird, but I guess it comes with what it is. You have to remember where you came from, and I definitely have enough brothers and sisters to kick me in the butt whenever I get out of line!?
