It’s a piece of film history – the house made famous by Home Alone is now on the market for a cool $2.4 million.
The 4,250-square-foot Georgian is located in suburban Chicago, in a town called Winnetka. It has 14 rooms, 3.2 baths, a screened-in porch, and of course, the famous staircase that Macaulay Culkin slid down in the movie. It sits on a half-acre of land.
Listing agent Marissa Hopkins, of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, says, “The $2.4 million isn’t just because of its cinematic history. It really is a residential masterpiece.”
The original owners bought the house in 1988 for $875,000 – still rather expensive! Emptynesters John and Cynthia Abendshien admit that now may not be the best time to sell the house, given the current real estate market. But, Cynthia says, “We just decided we couldn’t wait any longer.”
To prevent gawkers and fans from storming the home, there will be no open houses, and buyers will all be pre-screened.
“It would be a zoo,” Hopkins says. “There are a lot of people who would like to see the Home Alone house if they were given the opportunity.”
In other movie-houses-for-sale news, the Chicago-area home that was featured in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off has been taken off the market. It originally went on the market listed at $2.3 million, but it had most recently been offered just $1.65 million, says Coldwell Banker agent Meladee Hughes.

The weekend is almost upon us, and that means more movies to check out! Let’s dive right in.
First up, we have Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, and Natalie Portman. This much-anticipated film tells the story of Thor (Hemsworth), who is cast out of the fantastic relam of Asgard by his father Odin (Hopkins) for his arrogance and sent to Earth to live among humans. He falls in love with scientist Jane Foster (Portman), who teaches Thor much needed lesions, and his new-found strength comes into play when a villain from his homeland sends dark forces towards Earth.
Next up we have what I’ll call a chick-flick: Something Borrowed. Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, and Colin Egglesfield, this film follows the friendships, trust, and secrets that come to the surface when forever-single Rachel (Goodwin) falls for Dex, her best friend Darcy’s fiancé. Goodwin’s character is a successful lawyer, and John Krasinski also stars as her best friend.
Jumping the Broom opens this weekend, starring Paula Patton, Laz Alonso, and Angela Bassett. The wedding of Sabrina and Jason (Patton and Alonso) brings Sabrina’s uptown family and Jason’s downtown family together over a revealing weekend in Martha’s Vineyard.
Opening in a limited release is the Mel Gibson film The Beaver. Alongside Gibson, Jodie Foster and Anton Yelchin star in this movie about a troubled executive who adopts a hand-puppet beaver as his sole means of communicating with his family and colleagues.
Also opening in limited theaters is Last Night, starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, and Eva Mendes. When married couple Joanna and Michael (Knightley and Worthington) spend a night apart, they each face temptation that could change the fate of their relationship: Michael is out of town with a seductive co-worker, while Joanna encounters an ex, who has resurfaced in New York City.
Hobo With a Shotgun is also opening this weekend. It stars Rutger Hauer and was directed by Jason Eisener. A transient looking for a fresh start in a new town finds himself instead in the middle of an urban wasteland run by a notorious crime boss and crooked cops. Fed up with the violence around him, he grabs hole of a shotgun and begins to dole out civilian justice. Sounds a little unhinged, don’t you think?
Mickey Rourke, Megan Fox, and Bill Murray star in Passion Play. Down and out trumpet player Nate Pool (Rourke) meets Lily (Fox), an “angelic creature” working as a circus sideshow attraction. As they fall in love, they have to stay one step ahead of a gangster (Murray) who wants Lily for himself. Maybe I’m a little judgmental here, but Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray having a chance with Megan Fox? What?
Finally, opening this weekend in a limited release is There Be Dragons, directed by Roland Joffe. As journalist Robert Torres (Dougray Scott) investigates a book written by Opus Dei founder Josemaria Escriva (Charlie Cox), he peels back the layers of a decades-old story involving Escriva and Torres’ father, Manolo (Wes Bentley) – childhood friends who were ideologically separated by the Spanish Civil War.
