Weekend Box Office Round-Up: April 15-17, 2011

Rio is Number One at Box Office

The box office results are in, and the top two films couldn’t be more different. In first place is Rio, the animated venture from 20th Century Fox. It earned $40 million over the weekend – a solid showing for a first weekend. Earning just under half of that, at $19.2 million, was Scream 4 in second place. Not bad, but considering most films’ profits drop off considerably after the first weekend, this may be problematic if it had a high budget. Perhaps people weren’t interested in seeing a 4th installment of the horror movie?

In third place was HOP, which sunk from first place last weekend. It earned $11.1 million. In fourth place, Sony’s Soul Surfer brought in $7.4 million. Hanna slipped to fifth place, earning $7.3 million.

In sixth place, the Russell-Brand’ed Arthur earned $6.9 million, and in seventh place, Insidious took home $6.8 million.

8th place goes to Source Code, which earned $6.3 million, and rounding out the top ten were The Conspirator in 9th place and Your Highness in tenth place.

Did anyone see anything this weekend?

Bradley Cooper in Talks for ?The Crow? Remake

Bradley Cooper in talks for "The Crow"

Bradley Cooper is reportedly in talks to take the lead role in a remake of The Crow. Sources say the star is in negotiations with Relativity Media.

Mark Wahlberg was previous in talks for the part – that of a murdered man who comes back as an avenging angel – but that fell through.

Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo signed on to the project last week, and production is aiming to start this fall, with Apaches Entertainment and Relativity partnering up for the producing work.

The 1994 cult hit, which was directed by Alex Proyas was noted for introducing the brooding, gothic, white-faced star – a stark contrast to the colorfully bright superheroes that were, at the time, dominating pop culture. The film was adapted from the 1980s comic books by James O’Barr. The comic books were written as a method of unleashing grief over the death of O’Barr’s fiancée, who was killed in the late 1970s by a drunk driver.

In the comics, a man named Eric Draven and his girlfriend are assaulted, and he is shot, while she is raped and murdered. He believes he is resurrected to gain vengeance on the killers.

It’s interesting that they’re remaking this; the comics have inspired four movies and a TV series, and the original film isn’t even ten years old yet. Further, wouldn’t one be a bit wary of taking on the lead role? Maybe I’m just superstitious, but in the original film, star Brandon Lee died when a prop gun fired a real bullet – I’d be a bit nervous to take on that role.
