Weekend Box Office Round-Up: April 15-17, 2011

The box office results are in, and the top two films couldn’t be more different. In first place is Rio, the animated venture from 20th Century Fox. It earned $40 million over the weekend – a solid showing for a first weekend. Earning just under half of that, at $19.2 million, was Scream 4 in second place. Not bad, but considering most films’ profits drop off considerably after the first weekend, this may be problematic if it had a high budget. Perhaps people weren’t interested in seeing a 4th installment of the horror movie?
In third place was HOP, which sunk from first place last weekend. It earned $11.1 million. In fourth place, Sony’s Soul Surfer brought in $7.4 million. Hanna slipped to fifth place, earning $7.3 million.
In sixth place, the Russell-Brand’ed Arthur earned $6.9 million, and in seventh place, Insidious took home $6.8 million.
8th place goes to Source Code, which earned $6.3 million, and rounding out the top ten were The Conspirator in 9th place and Your Highness in tenth place.
Did anyone see anything this weekend?
