'Goodnight Dune' and Other Tales: When Children's Literature Meets Science Fiction

Way back when I was a wee little nerd, I remember reading Goodnight Moon with a frequency that bordered on obsessive. I'm not entirely sure what it was about the story that I liked so much; maybe it was the repetition, or the anthropomorphic bunny, or the trippy way in which the images in the room changed from page to page. In any event, had Julia Yu''s Frank Herbert-inspired Goodnight Dune existed in the mid-80's, I have no doubt that it would have usurped the original's honored place on my bookshelf in an instant. I mean, why bother saying goodnight to a red balloon and a cow jumping over the moon when you can say goodnight to a red baron and a Shai-Hulud bursting out of a dune instead? This got me to thinking: What might happen if other children's books met with other science fiction or fantasy titles in a series of glorious mash-ups? James Franco Responds to Twitter Critique

James Franco has been the name on critic’s tongues this week after his Oscar hosting job Sunday night. Whether they liked it or not, the critics have sure voiced their opinions.

However one critic seemed to hit Franco close to home and it had nothing to do with the Oscars.

Yale Daily News writer Cokey Cohen wrote, “James Franco, your Twitter sort of sucks,” in a piece posted on Saturday.

Franco initially joined Twitter in an effort to help modernize the Oscars and draw younger viewers.

Cohen was of the opinion that Franco should be sending out more than just “random links to pictures and replies to celebrities.”

“The pictures are okay in that a few are of him: candids are a Celebrity Tweeter staple. On the other hand, a lot of them—like this one—look like a fourteen-year-old girl with emo bangs and a Tumblr account attacked them with a few or her favorite Photoshop filters.”

So just what does Cohen feel fits celebrity Twitter account status? He would like to see Franco emulating Kanye West when it comes to tweets.

Well, Franco did not take too kindly to the criticism. On Tuesday he tweeted a picture of himself with the words “F--- THE YALE DAILY NEWS” across the photo.

Cohen was reportedly surprised about the response and said, if Franco was indeed targeting him, that it was “possibly the pinnacle of my career as a writer.”

He concluded by writing that Franco “ranted in the form of a random picture. #wellplayedsir…. I’m becoming convinced that James Franco’s whole life is a form of postmodern performance art. In that context, his Twitter fits right in.”

Well it looks like Franco won one critic over. Now on to the rest…

Kim Kardashian Releases New Single. What Do You Think?

Kim Kardashian Official Website

This morning, Kim Kardashian premiered her first single, Jam (Turn It Up), on the popular radio show On Air With Ryan Seacrest, and the model, reality star, clothing designer, and author, is admittedly nervous about how her latest project will be received.

"I think it's normal for me to be nervous,” Kim said on the radio show. “I’m human. I've never, you know sang before."

American R&B Singer The-Dream, who has produced songs for Beyonce and Rihanna, helped Kardashian with the new tune, which Kim says she only performed for fun. Proceeds from the new pop track will go to St. Judes Research Hospital.

"This was definitely something that was out of my comfort zone,” Kim wrote on her blog. “But I'm so glad that I met with The-Dream and that we worked on this project together."

To help promote Jam (Turn It Up), Kim posted a few sizzling photos from the music video shoot on her official website. The music video, directed by Hype Williams, is coming soon.

“I swear Hype Williams is the most creative guy I know! He is a genius! He came up with all of the different looks and wanted me to be experiment with looks that I had never tried before,” Kim gushed on her blog. “With each look I felt like I was a different character. I loved the red lips!"

What do you think of Kim’s song?

[ China ] Open Question : Is school really expensive in China?

I'm trying to get my mom to move back to China, but she doesn't want to. She says school is expensive? I forgot the name of her hometown, where her family is (and obviously where we will move), but aren't there things like public schools all over China?
