American Film Institute Honors Mel Brooks With Doctorate Degree

On Wednesday, the American Film Institute (AFI) honored actor/writer/director Mel Brooks with a doctorate of fine arts in recognition of the 85-year-old performer’s expansive career. Carl Reiner, Brooks’ dear friend and partner in the well-known comedy duo The 2,000 Year Old Man, presented Mel with the honorary degree.

“I’ve been offered a doctorate from a few well-known universities, but I’ve always said no because I didn’t have any emotional connection,” Brooks said during his commencement speech. “But when AFI asked me if I would accept a doctorate, an honor from AFI, I immediately said yes. AFI has an emotional connection to me.”

AFI provides leadership in film, television, and digital media and is dedicated to initiatives that engage the past, the present, and the future of the moving image arts.
