Grammy nominated musical composer and director Stormy Sacks announced that he, and The Friends of Hollywood High School Performing Arts Center, will produce a major fundraiser called “HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD…HIGH”, on January 10, 2013, 8PM at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA. At the benefit, legendary actress and Hollywood High School alumnus Carol Burnett will receive the First Annual Honor of Distinction Award from the Hollywood High School Performing Arts Center. The eponymous award will be presented to her by Tinseltown Titan Betty White at a star-studded affair.
Major celebrities that attended Hollywood High School along with many of Hollywood’s biggest stars, alumni and current performing arts students will participate in this incredible evening of entertainment. As an added bonus, the City of Los Angeles, through Councilman Tom LaBonge, will proclaim Jan 10 as “Carol Burnett Day” in Los Angeles.
StarCam will be on the Red Carpet, interviewing the stars as they arrive.
Carol Burnett, award-winning actress and best-selling author, is widely recognized by the public and her peers for her work on stage and screen, most notably The Carol Burnett Show. Named in 2007 by TIME magazine as one of the "100 Best Television Shows of All Time", the show ran for 11 years and received 25 Emmy Awards. Recognized for her comedic and dramatic roles on television, film and Broadway, Carol has also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and is a Kennedy Center honoree. Having penned two New York Times Bestsellers, This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection and her autobiography, One More Time, Carol's third book, Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story, will be published by Simon and Schuster in April 2013.
“This is a great thrill for me. I am so proud to be a part of this effort to bring the arts to Hollywood High,” Burnett said.
In tandem with required core curriculum, Hollywood High School Performing Arts Magnet provides students with invaluable access to the highest caliber performing arts programming. Outside of opportunities provided by the school, many students would have no access to the arts, and certainly not have the opportunity to participate in productions and programming of the Magnet's superior quality.
Because of major Los Angeles Unified School District cutbacks, funds allotted to the Performing Arts Magnet have diminished year after year. This year there is no funding for the fall and spring productions. More than ever, there is a greater need to raise money allowing the Magnet to provide instruction and to support its annual productions. Sacks says “This incredible school has a legacy of major movie, TV and music stars who attended or graduated, going back to Fay Wray, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Carol Burnett, Brandy Norwood, John Ritter, Lana Turner, Charlene Tilton and Laurence Fishburne, to name a few.” Continuing that tradition of excellence the LAUSD created The Performing Arts Magnet at Hollywood High School.
Ironically, due to extenuating circumstances, there was not a performing arts program at Hollywood High while Carol was a student, but she was the editor of the Hollywood High newspaper. As a student at UCLA, she fell in love with performing and the rest is history.
Sacks also stated “My vision is to have a legacy fundraising event yearly, so that the Hollywood High Performing Arts Magnet can be the training ground that supplies the industry with the most talented individuals, both on stage and behind the scenes. We hope to raise more than $100,000 so that we can provide those skills and opportunities for our students.”
Each year The Carol Burnett Honor of Distinction Award will be given to a Hollywood High Alum. This year's event is sponsored by Madame Tussauds Hollywood.
