Australian Radio Station Donates $500K to Nurse's Family
It was a prank gone horribly, horribly wrong, but following the suicide of nurse Jacintha Saldanha, 2DayFM, the radio station behind the prank, has donated $500,000 to the woman's family. The money will go towards supporting Saldanha's two daughters and her husband.
Saldanha committed suicide after two radio DJs in Australia called the hospital she was working at and asked to speak to Kate, "my granddaughter." The DJs were posing as the Queen of England and Prince Charles, and two days after the prank, the nurse was found dead. The nurse had fallen for the prank and had accidentally disclosed personal observations about Kate Middleton's health. The radio station played the phone call on air, and it went viral.Today, the station announced that the rest of the year's ad profits would be added to a fund for the family, and a minimum contribution of $500,000 will be made. Additionally, the DJs behind the prank, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, have been suspended.Rhys Holleran, the CEO of Southern Cross Austereo, the group that owns the station, said in a press statement, "We hope that by contributing to a memorial fund we can help to provide the Saldanha family with the support they need at this very difficult time."photo: Pat Pilon for wikipedia commons
