Bill Wellman Jr. Discusses the Differences Between Current Filmmakers & Those of The Past

Bill Wellman Jr. came out to the Turner Classic Film Festival to see the premiere of the restored and digitally re-mastered 1972 film, Cabaret. Since his father was an accomplished director, he was able to give StarCam a little insight on the difference between past filmmakers and present filmmakers!

?My father started actually as an actor in a Douglas Fairbanks Western called The Knickerbocker Buckaroo in 1919?He started to work his way up from a messenger boy. He worked as an assistant director. He worked in the cutting rooms. I mean, he was able to work up and he became a director and?it?s difficult today because there?s unions,? said Bill. ?I?m not knocking unions, but the point is it?s hard to jump from one thing to another. You can?t be an editor and then an assistant director. It?s kind of hard to move into all those areas and my father was able to do that.?

Bill has a solid appreciation and respect for the classics and admitted that every time he sees Cabaret he likes it even more! He complimented Bob Fosse?s choreography and the overall tone of the film. When it was released in 1972, times were relatively good, so the edgy tone of this film got quite a bit of attention. Check out what else Bill had to say about the film, his career and the changes in the industry in the full interview!
