Bonnie Franklin on Working with Norman Lear on ?One Day at a Time? & ?Modern Family?

Bonnie Franklin came out to the TV Land Awards and stopped by to chat with StarCam on the red carpet. She dished on what it was like working on One Day at a Time, a show so far ahead of its time, Norman Lear’s contributions and how Modern Family is similar.

“We were part of a Norman Lear empire and Norman Lear was absolutely an incredible innovator, a wonderful writer, a fabulous producer and a person that let us all take part and that doesn’t happen anymore,“ she explained. Norman Lear can be credited with a number of shows that still air decades after their pilots were created, like All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Good Times.

One of the unique things about One Day at a Time was that it was centered around a very different type of family. When asked if she thought shows today took similar approaches, Bonnie quickly responded with a perfect example.

“Of course! They do it all the time,” she said. “You know, you see that with Modern Family. You’ve got these three different kinds of families. You’ve got the gay family with the adopted daughter. You’ve got the older man married to the hot, spicy Sofia Vergara, so…yes of course you can. It was for its time very forward looking, but we’re talking 25 years ago.”
