Hugh Laurie May Take on Pirate Role on "Crossbones"

You know and love him as TV's famous doctor who insists that the patient never has Lupus, but soon, you might see him in a different light, as Hugh Laurie is reportedly in talks to star in an NBC comedy called Crossbones.

Laurie is currently negotiating with the show, but if he signs on, he'd play Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, a sort-of king who ruled over the pirates and thieves in New Providence in the Bahamas in the early 1700s. The show will be set in 1715, and is an action-adventure series.

In an NBC press release, the network wrote:
"It's 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence, the first functioning democracy in the Americas, where the diabolical pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown, part marauder's paradise, this is a place like no other on earth - and a mounting threat to international commerce. To gain control of this fearsome society, Tom Lowe, a highly skilled undercover assassin, is sent to the pirates' haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But the closer Lowe gets, the more he finds that his quest is not so simple."

Since House ended earlier this year, it's not surprising that he's on the hunt for a new role. House ended after eight seasons on FOX, but if he signs on with Crossbones, it'll continue his relationship with Universal Television, which produced House and will co-produce Crossbones.

Neil Cross, who created the BBC's hit show Luther will write and executive produce Crossbones. The show is based on Colin Woodard's book, The Republic of Pirates. NBC has ordered 10 episodes of the show, but there's so far no word of when the show would air. As of right now, Hugh Laurie is the only actor who is attached to the project.
