James Franco Screens ?SNL? Documentary at TriBeca Film Festival

James Franco has hosted Saturday Night Live twice (so far), and has been working on a documentary about the process of being on the show since 2008. Yesterday, he screened the documentary at the TriBeca Film Festival.
Although Franco originally intended for the doc to be a 7-minute short film for an NYU project he was working on, the final piece came out to be 90 minutes long. The piece focuses on one week at SNL, during which John Malkovich hosted.
Franco’s goal was to find out “what the mysterious comedy process was,” and was subsequently granted access that likely no other NYU student (or really, any student from anywhere) would be granted. Ah, celebrity perks! The film follows the work flow that goes into creating and producing one show, from the Tuesday morning pitch meeting with Lorne Michaels, to a table reading, to a dress rehearsal.
In a panel discussion at the screening, SNL cast member Will Forte told the audience, “There’s a lot of stuff I saw for the first time watching this documentary.” The New York Times also has a lengthy list of things they learned as an outsider – things like Doug Abeles, who writes and produces the “Weekend Update” segments, saying that he sometimes finds inspiration outside his window, looking at the NBC news ticker.
