James Vanderbilt to Write ?Spider-Man? Sequel

Talk about planning ahead! Columbia is ‘t even done shooting The Amazing Spider-Man yet, but the studio has already begun working on the Spider-Man reboot’s sequel, and it’s been announced that James Vanderbilt, the writer behind The Amazing Spider-Man, will be back at the drawing – er, writing – board for the next chapter in the movie’s franchise.

Vanderbilt had a meeting with the filmmakers and studio execs yesterday, outlining his take and getting the thumbs up to begin writing the new film. He has become a part of the Spider-Man family at Columbia, having first worked on Spider-Man 4 for the studio, back when Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire were still planning on continuing the series. At the time, Vanderbilt was chosen for his character-driven approach to the story rather than a focus on special effects. He then worked on an outline for a trio of movies.

When the project was reconfigured into a reboot, Vanderbilt was brought back to pen the new, character-focused version. He worked alongside Alvin Sargent.

The Amazing Spider-Man is set to wrap its Los Angeles portion of the film by Mid-April. Andrew Garfield will play Spider-Man and Marc Webb is directing the film. Columbia has it scheduled for release on July 3, 2012.
