Jillian Barberie Talks About the Major Impact Being Adopted Had on Her Life
Jillian Barberie, like tons of other people in the world, is adopted. Sure, there is an emotional impact on someone who has been adopted, but there?s also something much bigger than that. She told StarCam her personal story at the ABC Mother?s Day Luncheon.
?When you?re adopted you don?t know your nationality. You don?t know your medical history, so I knew nothing,? she explained. ?I used to go and write not applicable in those situations, so when I found my family I was 34. My mother told me that her sister was struggling with breast cancer, so it was very heavy for me.?
Not knowing your medical history makes it really difficult to take necessary precautions to prevent illness. Women who have relatives who have suffered from breast cancer are much more likely to develop it themselves. Now, there are a lot of steps you can take to lessen the odds, but for someone like Jillian who had no way of knowing, this news was really jolting. It?s important to know which conditions and diseases tend to run in your family so that you can face it with fists up and all the assets in your corner of the ring.
