Katy Perry Sets Record ? Fifth #1 Single from ?Teenage Dream?

Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream has become the first album in the 19-year history of Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 chart to generate five #1 hits. The fifth single from the record, “Last Friday Night (TGIF)” recently bumped its way into the top spot.

The other four songs that have edged their way to the top are “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg), “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” and “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West). The latest single pushes past two other albums that were contenders but had only had four top-of-the-chart hits: Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, from 2006-2007, and Lady Gaga’s The Fame, from 2009.

Teenage Dream has also dominated radio airwaves – its five singles account for five of the top six titles on the chart of highest-ever weekly plays on the radio.

“Last Friday Night” is not just the fifth number one single from Teenage Dream – it’s also Perry’s 7th number 1 single overall. She ties Lady Gaga and P!nk for second place as far as that goes; Rihanna holds the lead with 8 number 1 singles.

If “Last Friday Night” reaches the top of the Hot 100 chart (not the top 40 chart), Teenage Dream will join Michael Jackson’s Bad as the only two albums in the Hot 100’s 53-year history to produce five number 1 singles.

Impressive!
