MGM, Screen Gems Hire Writer for Carrie Remake

Another movie remake is on the way, only this one is from the 1970s rather than the 1980s. MGM and Screen Gems have hired playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to write a script for a Carrie remake, one that is more faithful to Stephen King’s 1974 novel by the same name than the 1976 film adapation starring Sissy Spacek. Carrie is the tale of a telekinetic teen whose insane mother and cruel classmates drive her to use her powers for murder.

So what does Stephen King thing about a Carrie remake?

“I’ve heard rumblings about a Carrie remake, as I have about The Stand and It,” King told Entertainment Weekly. “Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White… hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg.”

Aguirre-Sacasa is a well-known comic book author who adapted King’s epic novel The Stand into a comic book back in 2008.

Though I could care less about most movie remakes, I actually find the idea of Carrie redo kind of interesting. I’m a big fan of King’s early works and Carrie was one of my favorite books. Plus, today's teens have probably never even heard of Carrie, but would relish a film about revenge on cruel classmates (hence the appeal of a redo). I’d probably see a remake if it came out. How about you?
