Michelle Williams Cast as Glinda The Good Witch

Disney’s Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful, hit a snag recently as Disney executives and Director Sam Raimi butted heads over the casting of Glinda the Good Witch. Director Sam Raimi favored two time Oscar winner Hillary Swank for the part but the studio stood firm on Michelle Williams.

Disney won the battle and has cast two time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams in the iconic role of Glinda the Good Witch. The star studded cast includes James Franco, as the salesman who becomes the wizard; Mila Kunis as Theodora, a pre-wicked Witch of the West and Rachel Weisz as Evanora, an already wicked witch.

The premise of the prequel is that the Wizard, a snake oil salesman, is carried off in a balloon to a magical land where he encounters real witches. Theodora falls for the Wizard, Evanora wants to rule the land, and Glinda joins forces with the Wizard to defeat the wicked witch.

Williams is presently working on a western, Meek’s Cutoff, and is appearing later this year as Marilyn Monroe in the movie, My Week With Marilyn.  She will also be co-starring with Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman in the dramedy  Take This Waltz.
