Mike Huckabee Attacks Natalie Portman for Having Child Out of Wedlock

Mike Huckabee, former presidential candidate turned Fox News personality, attacked Natalie Portman and other celebrities on Monday for glamorizing the idea of having children before marriage.
Huckabee was on the on Michael Medved’s radio show when Medved brought up the “visibly pregnant” Portman and the “problematic message” that she is sending. Rather than leaving the comment there, Huckabee ran with it.
“You know Michael,” said Huckabee, “one of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of ,’Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children,’ and their doing just fine.
“But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of [out-of-wedlock children].”
Portman, who is expecting her first child, is engaged to the father, choreographer Benjamin Millepied, and has been quite a media presence as her film, Black Swan, earned many awards and nominations.
Being a single mother myself, I agree with Huckabee to a point. Hollywood does make single motherhood look easy. Single Hollywood moms simply hire nannies, allowing them to be able to work, go out with friends, and basically do what they want. They obviously also have enough money to provide for their children and do not have to worry about their job.
Normal single mothers, on the other hand, do not have this luxury. My small family is not “poor” but it has not been easy, through lawyers, layoffs, and government assistance. Through hard work and persistence I have gotten my education, I work full time, and I am able to provide for my child. Many other stories are not as good as mine.
Do I feel that Huckabee should have attacked Portman? No. However, I do believe he had some relevant points.
