Milli Vanilli Movie Gains Momentum

The famous lip-synching scandal of 1989 is creeping its way closer to the silver screen. Universal Pictures first announced that a Milli Vanilli movie was being developed back in 2007, but now a new production company and German filmmaker have signed on to move the biopic forward.
The Kennedy/Marshall Company is working with Florian Gallenberger to rewrite and direct the film, which will tell the story of the 80’s pop duo that tumbled from the top after being taunted as talentless frauds.
The story begins in Germany, 1988, when young models / dancers Fabrice Morvan and Robert Pilatus were approached in a club by music producer Frank Farian. He had a pop album ready to be released, but wanted Morvan and Pilatus to be the faces of the group, rather than the real singers themselves.
When the Milli Vanilli album quickly began making musical waves in Europe, Arista Records brought the act to America.
European fans claim it was always well known that Morvan and Pilatus weren’t the actual singers of the group and their lip synching wasn’t shocking. Many still don’t understand why it became such a media frenzy in the States.
Apparently, the international release of the album noted Morvan and Pilatus as visual performers, while the American version credited them for the vocals.
The friends were found to be frauds and never fully recovered. It hit Pilatus the hardest as he struggled with substance abuse and served three months in jail for assault, vandalism, and attempted robbery. On the eve of a potential comeback tour in 1998, Pilatus was found dead in a Frankfurt hotel of a drug overdose.
Jeff Nathanson, screenwriter from Catch Me If You Can, originally secured the cooperation of both Morvan and the estate of Pilatus, and plans to still help produce the film.
