Movie Openings: March 25, 2011

It’s that time again: the weekend is almost upon us, which means more movies for you to check out! There are six to pick from this week, so let’s check them out.

First up, and possibly the most anticipated of the bunch, is Sucker Punch. Directed by Zack Snyder, this stars Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, and Jena Malone (who gets bonus points for spelling her name like mine!). This film is about Babydoll (Browning) who is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather and creates a dreamworld that helps her cope with her harsh reality. Determined to free herself, she invited Rocket (Malone), Sweet Pea (Cornish), Blondie (Hudgens) and Amber to join her in a fight against their captors.

Next up is the family friendly Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. Starring Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, and Robert Capron, this sequel follows Greg Heffley (Gordon) and his older brother Rodrick (Bostick), who, during middle school, must deal with their parents’ misguided attempts to have them bond. This film was directed by David Bowers.

Out in limited release is the much-hyped Miral. Starring Freida Pinto, Hiam Abbass, and Willem Dafoe, this film was directed by Julian Schnabel.  Miral follows a Palestinian girl (Pinto) who is brought to the Dar Al-Tifl orphanage in the wake of the Arab-Israeli war, where she forms a bond with Hind Husseini (Abbass), founder of the orphanage. Drawn into the conflict as she matures, a connection with an Israeli socialist opens a door to a different life for her. Like many films, Miral has had to deal with some ratings drama from the MPAA.

Opening in LA and NYC this weekend is Potiche. Starring Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu, and Fabrice Luchini, this film tells the story of a trophy wife (Deneuve) whose husband is taken hostage by his striking employees. She takes the reins of the family business and proves to be a remarkably effective leader. Business and personal complications arrive in the form of her ex-lover (Depardieu) – a former union leader. This movie was directed by Francois Ozon.

Also opening in LA and New York City is Peep World, directed by Barry W. Blaustein. Starring Michael C. Hall, Sarah Silverman, and Rainn Wilson (strong cast!), this film tells the story of four siblings who deal with rising tension during their father’s 70th birthday celebration. The youngest of the siblings penned a best-selling book that exposed the family’s most intimate secrets – hence the tension.

Finally, again opening in just Los Angeles and New York City, is White Irish Drinkers. This tells the story of two brothers living in Brooklyn in 1975, who are looking for a way out of their working-class neighborhood –they make a pact to rob a local theater on the night of a Rolling Stones concert. This film was directed by John Gray and stars Nick Thurston, Geoffrey Wigdor, and Stephen Lang.
