New Movie Openings: April 29, 2011
We’re halfway through the week, and that means close enough to the weekend to talk about the new movies that are opening!
Up first is Fast Five, the latest installment in the Vin Diesel-clad franchise. Directed by Justin Lin, and starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson, this follows a federal agent (Johnson) after he is dispatched to Rio de Janeiro, where former cop Brian O’Conner (Walker) and ex-con Dom Toretto (Diesel) are assembling a final race as a desperate chance to gain their freedom.
Next up is the Disney-housed Prom. Starring Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, and DeVaughn Nixon, this movie (unsurprisingly) tells the story of a group of high school students as they get ready for their prom.
For the family-friendly bunch, check out Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil. In their second adventure, Red Riding Hood (voiced by Hayden Panettiere) and the Wolf (Patrick Warburton) investigate the disappearance of Hansel and Gretel. Glenn Close also lends her voice to this film.
Cave of Forgotten Dreams is opening in a limited release. Directed by and starring Werner Horzog, this documentary showcases the Chauvet caves of Southern France – humankind’s oldest known visual art.
Also out in limited release this weekend is Dylan Dog: Dead of Night. Starring Brandon Routh, Anita Briem, and Sam Huntington, this tells the story of Dylan Dog (Routh), a private investigator of the undead who tracks an artifact in the New Orleans underground that will help prevent a war from breaking out among his werewolf, vampire, and zombie clients. Sounds campy!
Finally, also opening in limited release is 13 Assassins. Directed by Takashi Miike, this stars Koji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, and Yusuke Iseya. It’s set at the end of Japan’s feudal era, and follows a team of unemployed samurai as they are called upon to take out an evil lord with an eye on the emperor’s throne.
