New Movie Openings: August 26, 2011

We made it! Is it just me, or did this week feel like it was 87 days long and not just 5? Just me? Cool. Alright, now that we’ve gotten to the weekend, though, it’s time to check out the new movies.

First up, we have Our Idiot Brother, which has an all-star cast including Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones, and Adam Scott. Swoon, amirite? A pot bust sends nice-guy Ned (Rudd) to jail, and although he gets released early due to good behavior he returns home to find that his girlfriend has left him and taken his dog with her. Homeless and unemployed, he divides his time couch surfing at the homes of his three sisters – and causing chaos in each of their lives. Okay, based on the cast alone, who is going to see this with me?

Up next is Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (not to be confused with the mid-1990s Nickelodeon show, Are You Afraid of the Dark?). Starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee Madison, this tells the story of a young girl who is sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, and who finds creatures in the new home that want to claim her as one of their own. Sounds… strange.

Moving right along, Colombiana comes out today. Starring Zoe Saldana, Michael Vartan, and Callum Blue, this tells the story of Cataley Restrepp, who was raised in the U.S. by her uncle to be a top-tier assassin, and who seeks revenge on the Colombian drug lord who executed her parents when she was ten years old.

Circumstance comes out today as well. Starring Sarah Kazemy, Nikohl Boosheri, and Reza Zixo Safai, this is about a wealthy Iranian couple who struggles to contain their teenage daughter’s growing sexual rebellion and her brother’s dangerous obsession.

Opening in L.A. and New York City is Higher Ground, which tells the story of a small evangelical Christian community that is thrown off when one of their own begins to question her faith. This film stars Very Farmiga, Joshua Leonard, and Dagmara Dominczyk.

Finally, opening in a limited release is Chasing Madoff, which gives viewers a look at how one investigator spent ten years trying to expose Bernie Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme that scammed approximately $18 billion from investors.
