Obscenity, Pornography, and Abortion, Oh My!: Sundance Films Vex Conservative Activists

Not everyone’s happy with the offerings at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A conservative group in Utah wants the state to cut festival funding because a few Sundance films contain objectionable content.
"What would you call a film festival airing movies that explore the lives of porn stars, adulterous relationships between mothers and their friends' children, and teenagers competing to lose their virginity?" wrote Derek Monson, Sutherland Institute's director of public policy. "Many Utahns' values would lead them to call this `obscenity' or `pornography,' but to the state of Utah, evidently it is simply `economic activity.'" Sundance founder Robert Redford dismissed Monson’s remarks, saying “the narrowest minds bark the loudest” and that’s it’s best to ignore those who don’t understand the Constitution. Zing! Utah spends around $300,000 supporting Sundance which brings in around $80 million for the state. In other words, it’s more likely Monson will star in porn film than Utah will cut funds to the lucrative festival. Wondering which films ruffled the most feathers this year? Here are four of the Sundance Film Festival’s most controversial submissions.Lovelace
Starring Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, and Juno Temple, Lovelace explores the life of the Linda Lovelace, one of the most popular porn stars of all time. Conservative groups are not pleased.
Two Mothers
In a film one critic called “the best and worst movie” at Sundance, Two Mothers stars Naomi Watts and Robin Wright as two friends who each have a secret affair with the other’s son. Exclusive Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to the film Monson calls “obscene.”

After Tiller
Abortion, especially late-term abortion, is an extremely divisive topic. One only has to look at the comments in this article to see how passionate people feel about taking a pro-life or pro-choice stance. After Tiller is a documentary about the only four doctors in America willing to do late-term abortions after the 2009 murder of Dr. George Tiller.

Escape From Tomorrow
Escape From Tomorrow is controversial, not because it features questionable content, but because director Randy Moore shot the entire film in Walt Disney World without obtaining the proper permits. Someone’s getting sued!
