"One Tree Hill": Creator Mark Schwahn Says Final Season Isn't Going to Have a Happy Ending

After weeks of anxiously awaiting the last of the One Tree Hill season premieres, the night finally arrived. Wednesday night’s episode of what is likely to be the most emotional season yet, didn’t provide a whole lot of answers to all the chaos seen in previews. We still don’t know how everyone seems to end up in such a low place and we definitely don’t know who will be leaving their journey with OTH on a gurney.
I will admit that I am far more emotionally invested in the lives of these fictitious characters than I should be, but that’s just part of how the show was designed. It’s not just about the story line or the drama. It’s about the characters and their tales of life, love, struggle and most importantly friendship.
Reflecting back on Season 1, it’s hard to believe how many crucial characters have already fallen out of the story, moving on from the river court days in the place they called home. Only Sophia Bush (Brook Davis), Bethany Joy Galeotti (Haley James Scott), Paul Johansson (Dan Scott), Lee Norris (Marvin “Mouth” McFadden) and James Lafferty (Nathan Scott) remain from the original cast.
Creator/producer Mark Schwahn has already said he’s not looking for a happy ending, which leaves a lump in the throat of all die-hard fans. He said this season was focused on a little twinge of heart-ache and a bitter-sweetness. This last season inspired him to take some risks, so be prepared for what’s likely to be the most intensely chaotic season yet.
There’s no doubt that each Wednesday night for the rest of this final season will require tissues, a bottle of wine and a good-old sense of nostalgia! And so begins the last few hours we’ll get to spend escaping real life to hang out in that dramatic, yet quaint little town of Tree Hill.
