Shanola Hampton on Coping With the Loss of Her Mother to Breast Cancer
Shanola Hampton is an incredible woman. She lost the only person that really understood her when she was just 16 years old and rather than giving in to her pain and suffering, she powered through it. She talked to StarCam?s Jennifer Tapiero about what it was like losing her mother to breast cancer and how she coped with the pain.
?She?s definitely part of my every day because it?s my mother? My mother and I were very, very close. I sort of was the different one in the family. If you look at pictures now, I?m the one with the dreadlocks and I?m an actress and the rest of my sisters are educators and principals, so mom kind of got my different. So, it was very difficult?to lose her at such a young age,? Shanola explained. ?I was only in high school?I think that it?s important not to use that as an excuse for bad behavior and you can?t crawl up in a hole and die yourself. You have to live in honor of them and I try to live my daily life in a way that she would be proud. She would love all of this and she?s the one who took me to theater and she would just sit there and really get a kick out of it. When I get different parts, I know she was my angel.?
Shanola also expressed how much respect she has for the people who spend each day searching for a cure and taking care of patients. It takes a special kind of person to be compassionate enough to tend to others that way, but it also requires tough skin. She volunteers at hospitals and brings the joy while she?s there, but said that it?s really hard to see people hurting like that. She just wants to love them and make their pain go away.
