Slew of Re-Releases Coming to Theaters

Forget reboots, remakes, and endless sequels. Hollywood has discovered the lucrative power of re-releases. Ghostbusters, Twilight, and a handful of Disney classics are a few old films scheduled to return to the big screen with many more sure to come.

Ghostbusters is the first hit up for re-release, returning for a limited in run in theaters on October 13. The 1984 classic starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver pulled in $291 million worldwide and studio bigwigs are undoubtedly hoping to squeeze out a little more. October 27th is the last day fans can see the classic flick in theaters.

"This is a special celebration of the movie, giving the fans a chance to see it on the big screen in perfect digital presentation," Rory Bruer, president of Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures, said in a statement. "As we head towards Halloween … we’re glad that everyone’s favorite paranormal eliminators are on the case."

The next installment of the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn – Part 1, opens in theaters November 18, and Summit Entertainment will re-release Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse the first three Tuesdays in November. Dubbed Twilight Tuesdays, the re-release events will begin on November 1 with Twilight with New Moon following on November 8 and Eclipse following on November 15. According to DeadBolt.com, the re-releases will give fans more content than the first run of each film, including Twilight Saga cast introductions, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content.

After the surprising success of The Lion King 3D, Disney recently announced plans to covert other animated classics into 3D. Beauty and the Beast will return to the big screen on January 13, 2012, while Finding Nemo will return on September 14, 2012. Monsters, Inc. is slated for re-release on January 18, 2013, while The Little Mermaid will make a comeback on September 13, 2013.

What re-releases are coming next? Titanic? Gone With the Wind? E.T.?
