Stephen King Announces Release Date for "Doctor Sleep," the "Shining" Sequel

Lately, sequels are released within a few years of their previous counterparts, but that's not the case with Stephen King's upcoming sequel to The Shining. Doctor Sleep will be released in September 2013, the author announced today on his website. That will make it 36 years since The Shining was released in 1977, and 33 years since its movie incarnation, which came out in 1980 and famously starred Jack Nicholson.

King read a portion of the book last year at George Mason University, and a recap of that reading noted that the sequel deals with Danny Torrance, the son from the original, and his adult life.

In Doctor Sleep, Danny is a hospice worker who uses his powers to help sick patients pass away without pain. Unfortunately, according to i09, "he runs afoul of a gang of wandering psychic vampires who feed on people's energy."

The book also deals with a "special" 12-year-old girl that he has to save from the murderous vampires. The book is said to be an "epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon."

It looks interesting, and we're curious if it will get made into a movie in the next several years; we'd venture to say yes, but you never know.
