?The Beaver? Receives Standing Ovation at Cannes

Though The Beaver bombed in the US, Deadline reports that the Cannes crowd loved the film so much they gave it a 10-minute standing ovation.

The film, starring Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson, is the tale of a depressed toy executive (Gibson) who turns his life around with the help of a beaver hand puppet. The Beaver performed poorly at the box office, bringing in only $104,000 at its opening, leaving many to wonder if Mel’s drama with Oksana Grigorieva was the reason fo ther film’s failure. However, Summit executive Richie Fay says the film’s content, not Gibson, is the reason for the The Beaver’s poor reception.

“I don’t think this is as much a repudiation of Mel and his personal life as it is about a film with difficult subject matter,” Summit Entertainment president of domestic distribution Richie Fay told the Los Angeles Times. “As it turns out, I think the film is more of an art-house specialty kind of movie than a broader commercial film….even though it’s got a commercial actor in it like Mel Gibson.”

Jodie Foster made a similar claim, telling the press at Cannes that she’d made the film with a “European sensibility” and expected the audience to be receptive.
