?The Dark Knight Rises? Still Number One at the Box Office

Though two new films opened over the weekend, including the highly-anticipated Total Recall, The Dark Knight Rises easily maintained the top spot at the box office, raking in an additional $36.4 million.

"It was the clear runaway favorite," Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com, told the Wall Street Journal. "The Dark Knight is rising above the fray and word of mouth is just tremendous on the film and people keep going back to see it."

Based on a 1990 movie by the same, Total Recall opened at $26 million, about half a million dollars short of the original film’s opening tally. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, and Michael Ironside made the first film famous, while the reboot stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, and Kate Beckinsale.

Third place goes to another new release, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days with an opening of $14.7 million. Dog Days is the third film in the Wimpy Kid series and stars Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, and Devon Bostick.

Meanwhile, Ice Age: Continental Drift and The Watch sank to fourth and fifth place, with Ice Age earning $8.4 million and The Watch pulling in $6.3 million. Ted came up sixth with a box office take of $5.4 million. Step Up Revolution, which opened in fourth place last week, now sits at number seven with earnings of $5.3 million.

Last, but not least, is The Amazing Spider-Man, Brave, and Magic Mike with respective earnings of $4.3, $2.8, and $1.3 million. Savages and Moonrise Kingdom fell from the top ten this week.

Next week brings the release of four new films – The Bourne Legacy and The Campaign, as well Hope Springs and Nitro Circus the Movie 3D, which both open on Wednesday. Check back next week to see how the newcomers fare.
