"The Hobbit" Still Number One at the Box Office

Despite the release of three new films, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit is still number one at the box office. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey earned $31.9 million over the holiday weekend, bringing its box office reign to three straight weeks.
“I think it's just a big epic that feels like a great way to end the movie-going year,” mused Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “There's momentum there with this movie."Second place goes to Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained which enjoyed a weekend debut of $30 million. Starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson., Django Unchained is a Western drama about a freed slave on a quest to claim his wife from a cruel plantation owner. Musical Les Misérables, meanwhile, debuted at number three with a box office take of $27.2 million. Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried star in the epic film based on a French novel penned in 1862. A third new release, Parental Guidance, came in at number three with weekend earnings of $14.5 million. Starring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, Marisa Tomei, and Tom Everett Scott, Parental Guidance is a family comedy about generational differences. Jack Reacher rounds out the list of top five box office earners with a weekend gross of $14 million. Other films in the top ten include This is 40 ($12.5 million), Lincoln ($7.3 million), The Guilt Trip ($6.7 million), Monsters, Inc. 3D ($6.4 million), and Rise of the Guardians ($4.9 million).
