"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" Trailer Released

From Harry Potter to Twilight to The Hunger Games, film adaptations of YA fantasy novels have been having smashing success. The next making the jump from the page to the screen is the long-awaited City of Bones, the first part of series The Mortal Instruments. The internet basically exploded the other night when the first City of Bones trailer was posted on MTV on Wednesday night. For those who haven’t seen it yet, the trailer is after the jump.
A few things you may not know about City of Bones and its stars:
Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare started her fiction career as a fanfic writer. She became well-known in the fan fiction community for her Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter stories.
Lily Collins is the daughter of musician Phil Collins. As a teenager, she wrote a column called NY Confidential for the magazine Elle Girl.
The runes used in the film are the same ones that Clare commissioned from an artist several years ago for her website.
The trailer was made just days after filming, so, there are still plenty of effects – particularly involving the demons – in the works.
The nightclub seen in the trailer, Pandemonium, gets its name from the capital of Hell in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost and means “all demons.”
According to author Cassandra Clare, that is Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace) executing all those acrobatic flips, not a stunt double.
Director Harald Zwart said that his goal with the film was to be as loyal to the novels as possible, and he consulted with the author often.
Although set in New York, City of Bones was actually filmed in Toronto. This is a common choice because Toronto is less expensive. Other New York based films to take advantage of Toronto’s resemblance to the Big Apple include American Psycho, Dark Water, Fantastic Four, and Moonstruck.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hits theaters August 23, 2013.
