Throw a BAFTA Film Award Watching Party

This Sunday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts is throwing their big bash celebrating the greats in film. And, they’ve posted plenty of tips on their website to help you join in on the glamorous shindig from home. How about inviting a few friends and dressing for the event? Suggestions for throwing your own BAFTA Film Award viewing party:

How to Dress

BAFTA stylists say that tuxes are still de rigueur for the guys. But, the fellas aren’t stuck with a basic, boring penguin suit. Those strutting the red carpet will be upping the ante with snazzy waistcoats, and lots of posh velvet details.

For the ladies, make-up and hairstyles are decidedly retro. Think smokey eyes and classic Hollywood red lips. Nude lipstick will also make an appearance for those who like a more restrained look.

Fashion-forward types are looking back to the 60s for nighttime hair styles. The style you pick should work with your dress: go simple and elegant with a simpler dress; more involved dresses can lend themselves to more involved dos.

When it comes to accessories, go bold with big cocktail rings, bright colors and ostentatious cuff links.

What to Serve

When your guests arrive, serve your them this year’s official BAFTA cocktail, the DISARONNO BAFTA Originale:

DISARONNO BAFTA Originale

One ounce DISARONNO

One ounce pomegranate syrup (available at Middle Eastern grocery stores or online; substitute grenadine if you are on a tight budget)

Fresh lemon juice

2 dashes of aromatic bitters

Soda water

Fresh pomegranate seeds

Edible gold leaf to finish (available online; if the price scares you off, consider getting the look with Wilton edible glitter)

Chill a flute glass with crushed ice. Pour amaretto, pomegranate syrup, a squeeze of lemon juice and aromatic bitters into a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into your glass, and add soda water. Top with fresh pomegranate seeds and a sliver of edible gold leaf.

Not a drinker? BAFTA also created several non-alcoholic celebratory drinks. Our favorite of the BAFTA mocktails:

Berry Blockbuster

Fresh berries

Juice of one lemon

2 teaspoons extra-fine sugar

carbonated mineral water

Muddle the berries, lemon juice and sugar in a glass. Add mineral water and stir. Garnish with fresh berries or a twist of lemon.

BAFTA makes no suggestions for hors d’ourvres to accompany the cocktails. We think simple, single bite appetizers would be great: mini-quiches (grab ‘em in the frozen section), smoked salmon canapés and simple cut veggies.

Showtime Activities

If you are one of those people who keep their phone out while attending a party, you can get specially-targeted updates by following the relevant hashtags on Twitter. For those who don’t really do award shows, they suggest following #AmusingCats. Find the right hashtag to follow using the handy flow chart below.

(BAFTA has not yet responded to queries regarding their organization’s participation in populating the #AmusingCats tag.)
